FINALLY!!

I.M.P.A.C.T.'s first Newsletter is out!

It's been a long time coming, but we are finally here. I've been trying to complete this Newsletter for months. I've got alot on my plate and with the new arrival of our baby boy, Jacob Michael Vassar, I've had more than my share of challenges. But as in all things, persistance pays off.

First off, I.M.P.A.C.T. is moving forward with leaps and bounds thanks to people of great vision. I would like to take a moment right from the start to recognize and express my deepest appreciation for their support.

Bishop Lannie Arnold who has been an amazing friend, and contributer to the mission of Mid-west I.M.P.A.C.T. Org.

A special thanks to Mr. Gamble of "Supportive Community Living Systems." His decades of experience has enabled I.M.P.A.C.T. to become more than just a great idea.

Mr. Miller, who has been a long time friend and has never failed in his support and encouragement as I.M.P.A.C.T. has come into fruition.

Mr. Eddy Phillips, an experienced Mentor who simply took the time to share.

Mr. Pate, whose encouragement has meant more than he realizes.

Where are we?

As some of you already know, our Articles of Incorporation are in and approved. We have established our EIN number and the application for our 501(c3) is on the uncles desk. We will have our tax exempt number within the week and we are in the middle of putting together our first fundraiser. It will be a raffle, so I hope I can get every one to sell some tickets. Oh, and don't be embarrassed to buy one or two, or three. We are all doing our part and it goes without saying, it's greatly appreciated.

I.M.P.A.C.T. is accepting resumes and interviewing qualified Administrative Directors. Referrals are welcome. The Number to call is 708-560-8574 or 708-351-3673 or Email:IMPACTY2K@aol.com

I.M.P.A.C.T. is also accepting resumes and interviewing potential Board Members, volunteers, Mentors and Coaches who have the vision and the ambition to accept the Challenge. We are also in the market for qualified grant writers. Again, don't hesitate to throw us a name or two or three, or, well, you know.

So much more to do.

I.M.P.A.C.T.'s Intensive Training is well developed but there are still some areas that need attention. For example, I still need to finish the "Course Description" page on the Web site. It seems like such a little thing, that it consistantly gets pushed back.

Staff Training is the agenda of great importance at the moment. Miss Pate from Aunt Marthas is facilitating the Mentor Orientation and training. She is also supplying I.M.P.A.C.T. with the resources to take on this task for itself in the near future.

We will also be partnering with SERA learning center in the near future. This however will depend on funding.

We are also in the process of taking quotes from printers, silk screeners ,attorneys, and insurance agents. It goes with our saying that all referrals are taken into consideration.

What's next?

What, like all that's not enough? Well there is one more agenda the board members brought to the table during our last meeting. LOCATION. We are on a facility hunt. At the moment any training that is done will be conducted in my home. This wouldn't be so bad other than the fact that I live in the south suburbs. There is something about a Inner city Mentoring Program being conducted in the burbs that just doesn't ring true. So, once again, any ideas or help in this area will be greatly appreciated.

Getting involved

George J. Vassar is the founder and Executive Director of Mid-west I.M.P.A.C.T. Org. He has been working in the Department of Corrections for the past nine years, three of which he spent inside maximum security.

"In the three brief years I spent in maximum security, it became clear to me that jail had become more than just a holding tank for pretrial detainees. It had evolved into a sort of "sub-cultural existence. Inmates would meet their family and friends in lock up, shake hands and swap stories as if it were a annual reunion. Sons and daughters would visit their fathers behind three inches of glass and speak through reinforced metal screens just as their fathers has done before them, and their fathers before them. In short, what I was watching was a revolving door of third and fourth generation detainees. It is easy to understand why the Department of corrections had become a multi-million dollar industry. What I couldn't understand was why there were so many willing participants."

Over the past five years, he has been assigned to the local Impact Incarceration Program, most commonly referred to as Boot Camp. As a Drill Instructor he had the opportunity to work more closely with the young men incarcerated in our correctional facility. As a recently promoted Sergeant, he has had the opportunity to experience the many challenges facing the staff and administration.

"I.M.P.A.C.T. has been a long held dream that has come from a desire to contribute to solutions rather than treat the symptoms. I've come to realize my ability to impact the lives of these young men by teaching them the skills necessary to exercise their personal power. I've become invested, involved and most importantly, I have become challenged. I would like to extend that challenge to you."

Sgt. G. Vassar is a graduate from the SAIC with a BFA. He is certified through the United States Army Military Police School as a Rehabilitation Instructor. He has been awarded a Department Commendation and Letter of Recognition. As a certified Personal Trainer, a Life Coach, a Mentor and Life Skills Instructor, he works with an extreamly diverse client base. George helps those who are receptive and motivated to transform their environments, accomplish their goals, and design a fulfilling life.
